Keeping re-chargeables working longer

Life Expectancy
Under perfect conditions rechargeable batteries can be recharged from between 300 to 1000 times. If this were a daily discharge-recharge then they would last about 18 months to 2 years.

As the battery nears the end of its overall life its total capacity becomes diminished, so your radio would need recharging sooner, eventually it will not last a full working day.

Maximizing Battery Life
To maximize battery life expectancy you should note the following points.

  • Avoid overcharging the battery, it will cause early failure.
  • Partial discharge between recharges will also cause early failure. (the memory effect). This is a particular problem with NiCd batteries. Its is less of a problem with NiMh and non-existant with Lithium Ion.
  • Avoid totally discharging your battery. Recharge as soon as your radio fails to work.

To avoid these problems carefully follow the manufacturers instruction supplied with the radio.. Leaving a battery in an 'overnight' charger for several days will soon damage a battery.
