PoC. Press-to-Talk over Cellular.
In the UK, using the cellular network for Push-To-Talk (PTT) communications is commonly known as Push-To-Talk over Cellular (PoC). These systems are sometimes referred to as LTE radios or network radios. With few exceptions, PoC devices rely entirely on cellular coverage, making them ineffective in areas with no signal. However, many models also support Wi-Fi, allowing them to function indoors.
Coverage & Features
PoC offers nationwide coverage, as long as there is a mobile signal. Most systems include location tracking as standard, often integrating with platforms like Google Maps. This feature is typically managed through dispatcher software, which allows a controller to monitor and communicate with users via a large-screen device.
To operate, all PoC systems require a PoC server to handle communication. These servers are usually rented from the PoC service provider.
Components of a PoC System
When setting up a PoC system, consider three main components:
-
Hardware
-
PoC Service
-
SIM Cards
1. Hardware
PoC can technically run on smartphones, tablets, or desktops, but the most practical devices are handheld or in-vehicle radios. These often resemble traditional two-way radios—with few buttons and no screen—but run embedded Android systems with the PoC app installed.
When choosing hardware, apply the same criteria used for two-way radios:
-
Build quality
-
Battery life
-
Ease of charging and repair
A common issue with cheaper PoC radios is accessory compatibility, especially with earpieces. Make sure the radios support your preferred accessories. Well-known brands like Icom offer a wide range of options, including Bluetooth earpieces and hands-free car kits.
2. PoC Service
As with any technology service, you get what you pay for. Choose a provider that offers:
-
High uptime
-
Strong technical support
PoC systems are complex and rely on several technical components, so reliable support is crucial.
3. SIM Cards
Some PoC providers require you to use their SIM cards, while others let you choose your own. Fortunately, PoC uses relatively low data, so even affordable SIMs are often sufficient.
In remote areas, multi-network roaming SIMs are highly recommended. These more expensive SIMs can connect to multiple networks, greatly improving coverage and reliability.
